BJP Telangana unit president N. Ramchander Rao said that they were condemning the State government’s attempts to blame the Centre for non-implementation of 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in the State, accusing the ruling Congress of highlighting the issue to conceal its administrative failures. He also slammed the State government for not conducting local body polls.

Addressing a conference at the State party office on Monday, Mr. Rao said the Congress’s proposed Kamareddy meeting is a ‘meeting of betrayal’. “If the Congress government is sincere in its efforts to provide 42% BC quota in education, employment and local body polls, it would have followed the due legal process before passing the bills,” he said, questioning their commitment to the BCs.

“I suggested the government amend Section 285 of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, earlier. But after 22 months, they knew their mistake and passed the Bill recently amending the act following the suggestion,” he said, countering their allegations that the BJP was trying to obstruct the quota.

He also censured the Congress government for its failure to conduct local body polls, stating that ₹1,600 crore in Central funds had been withheld by the Centre since no elected bodies were working in the local bodies. “In total, Central funds to the tune of ₹3,000 crore are facing risk of being withheld unless the elections are conducted at the earliest,” he said.

Regarding the Vice-President election, Mr. Rao asked why the Congress had fielded a Reddy candidate instead of a BC candidate if it was committed to the uplift of BCs on all fronts.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be the chief guest at the Telangana Liberation Day celebrations to be held at Secunderabad Parade Ground on September 17.
