The Collectorate in Kottayam on Friday received a bomb threat via email, which turned out to be a hoax.

According to the police, the email was received by the Women and Child Welfare department at the Collectorate early in the morning. The email threatened that a bomb would explode at 1.30 p.m. and the employees should be evacuated.

The officials passed on the information to the District Police Chief and soon the police bomb squad and dog squad arrived at the scene and thoroughly searched the Collectorate and premises, which proved that it was hoax.

The incident affected the functioning of the government offices at the Collectorate for sometime. Employees were allowed to return to the building once the threat was deemed unfounded.

This is the second time this year that the Collectorate has received a fake bomb threat. The previous message was received in April. An investigation has been launched to trace the person who sent the email.
