The Centre has resolved to transform the historic Madikeri Palace in Kodagu district of Karnataka into a heritage tourism destination, taking up conservation and development of the site that includes a proposed museum and upgraded amenities for visitors. The development follows efforts by Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who had sought protected monument status for the palace.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has informed the MP that the palace has been declared a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. Also, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is looking into various proposals for comprehensive development of the monument.

Among the proposals under consideration is a site museum featuring digital exhibits aimed at showcasing Kodagu’s rich history and cultural heritage, besides enhancing the visitor experience and encouraging larger public engagement.

On March 18, 2025, Mr. Wadiyar had submitted a representation to the Union Government seeking protected monument status for the palace, and the establishment of a museum at the site. Since then, he has been pursuing the matter with the Ministry of Culture, and senior ASI officials.

Welcoming the Centre’s response, Mr. Wadiyar expressed confidence that the project would help transform Madikeri Palace into a key heritage and tourism destination.

The initiative is expected to give a boost to the preservation of Kodagu’s cultural heritage, and attract greater national attention and investment towards the region’s historic sites.
