Rescue teams were alerted around 7:30 a.m. local time. After hours of search using sonar and dive teams, her body was found around 9:40 a.m.

They said: “We are saddened to confirm the death of a participant in the race during the swimming portion of today’s Ironman Texas triathlon. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends and offer our support at this difficult time. According to her close friend Taveira, Mara had not been feeling well before traveling for the race. He shared: “She was ill before the trip, she wasn’t okay. My wife and I spoke with her to say she was too weak for this race, although a couple of days ago when we talked to her, she insisted she was okay. I still cannot believe what’s happened. Our thoughts are with her friends and family members. May she rest in peace.”Mara was 38 years old and came from São Paulo, Brazil.
