Former BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has once again stirred controversy with her comments made during a religious gathering in Bhopal. Thakur urged parents to take extreme measures against daughters who visit or associate with “non-Hindus," even suggesting that they “break their legs" if they disobey family values.

Her remarks, captured in a video that has since gone viral on social media, have triggered sharp criticism from political opponents and social groups, who accused her of promoting hate and violence.

“Break Her Legs If She Goes To A Non-Hindu"

While addressing the gathering, Thakur told parents that strict discipline was necessary to prevent their daughters from straying away from what she described as “Hindu values."

“If our girl tries to go to a non-Hindu man, do not spare breaking her legs. Because someone who does not follow our values, who does not listen, must be disciplined," she said.

Thakur also said that physical punishment of children was justified if done for their “own good."

“If, for the good of your child, you have to beat them, do not hold back — when parents chastise children, they do so for a better future, not to tear them to pieces," she said.

In her speech, Thakur reflected on how daughters are celebrated at birth but criticised what she called a “change in values" when they grow up.

“When a daughter is born, mothers rejoice and say Lakshmi has come into the house; everyone congratulates them. But when she grows up, she goes off to become someone’s wife (of another faith)," she remarked.

Viral Video Draws Sharp Reactions

In the video clip posted on Facebook, Thakur doubled down on her comments, saying:

“Strengthen your mind, and make it so strong that if our daughter does not obey us, if she goes to a non-Hindu’s house, leave no stone unturned in considering breaking her legs. Those who do not obey the values and do not listen to their parents must be punished. If you have to beat your children for their well-being, do not step back."

She further urged parents to stay alert and keep a close watch on their daughters.

“Be more vigilant towards girls who do not follow values, do not listen to parents, do not respect elders, and are ready to run away from home. Don’t let them leave your homes — stop them either by beating, explaining, calming, loving, or scolding them," she added.

Opposition Slams Remarks As “Incitement To Violence"

Thakur’s remarks have been widely condemned by Opposition leaders, who accused her of promoting intolerance and misogyny.

Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta questioned the motive behind such inflammatory statements.

“Why is there so much noise and hatred being spread when only seven cases (of alleged religious conversions) in Madhya Pradesh have resulted in convictions?" he said.
