What started as a dream wedding turned into a chilling nightmare for a groom from Rajasthan when his bride attempted a dramatic escape by jumping from a balcony, just two days after tying the knot. The woman, who had allegedly married him as part of an elaborate scam, ended up with broken legs and in police custody, exposing a gang operating across multiple states to dupe men under the pretext of marriage.

The incident unfolded in the Banad police station area of Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district. Bharat, the victim, had been struggling to find a bride. That’s when Nandkishore Soni, an acquaintance of his father, stepped in and offered to arrange a match. The bride, 23-year-old Suman Pandey, was introduced as a suitable girl from Bihar. The deal was sealed with Rs 3 lakh – Rs 1.7 lakh in cash and Rs 1.3 lakh online – allegedly taken by the middlemen.

The marriage was solemnised at an Arya Samaj temple, following traditional rituals. Bharat believed he had finally found a life partner. But two days later, when he entered the bedroom on their honeymoon night, the truth began to unravel.

According to police sources, a heated argument broke out between the couple after Bharat discovered that Suman had been hiding a secret that she was already married and had used forged documents to declare herself single during the temple ceremony.

In a bid to flee the house, Suman locked Bharat inside the room, fashioned a rope from her saree, and tried to climb down from the balcony where two accomplices, Sandeep and Ravi, were waiting to receive her. But her escape went horribly wrong. The makeshift rope snapped or slipped, and she fell, fracturing both legs.

Her screams alerted Bharat’s family, who rushed to the spot and managed to catch her. The others fled. The injured woman was taken to the hospital, where, police said, she continued trying to mislead them about her identity and intentions.

It was during further interrogation that Suman broke down and revealed the larger scam. Investigators said the group included Sandeep Sharma from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi, Ravi and Ruby Devi from Bihar, and Nandkishore and Jitendra Soni from Jodhpur. Together, they allegedly ran a racket that targeted single men desperate to get married, taking large sums of money and marrying off women who would then vanish shortly after the wedding.

Police have registered an FIR and launched a search for the absconding accused. Authorities believe this is not an isolated incident and suspect the gang may have duped several other victims in similar fashion across state lines.
