Bro held for killing Doon advocate over Rs 10L bank withdrawal

Dehradun: Police in Dehradun on Monday claimed to have solved the murder of a 24-year-old advocate within 10 hours of the incident, arresting his younger brother, who allegedly shot him dead following frequent disputes over money.

Police said the immediate trigger was the recent withdrawal of Rs 10 lakh from their father’s bank account.The victim, Sohail Haroon, was found with a gunshot wound at his residence in Bhuddi village under the Patel Nagar police station limits late on Sunday night. Initially, family members and relatives alleged that unidentified assailants had entered the house, shot him and fled.According to police, Sohail’s younger brother, Shahid Haroon (21), repeatedly claimed that unknown persons had barged into the house and opened fire.

However, investigators grew suspicious after examining CCTV footage and evidence collected from the scene.SSP Pramendra Dobhal said, “Police teams scrutinised CCTV footage from the house and nearby locations but found no evidence of any outsider entering the premises around the time of the incident.” Investigators also found that recordings from cameras installed at the house had been deleted and the system had been left in live-view mode.

During a search of the house, police recovered a country-made pistol hidden inside a bathroom. Shahid allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the weapon, prompting investigators to take him into custody for questioning.Police said Shahid allegedly confessed during interrogation to killing his elder brother. According to investigators, the accused was addicted to drugs and frequently sought money from family members to fund his lifestyle and impress friends.

Sohail often objected to his habits and had reprimanded him on several occasions.The dispute escalated after Sohail allegedly discovered that Shahid had secretly withdrawn Rs 10 lakh from their father’s bank account while their parents were away on Haj pilgrimage. Police said Shahid harboured resentment after being confronted and allegedly beaten by his elder brother over the issue.Investigators claimed that he had planned the murder in advance and disabled the CCTV recording system two days before the crime.

On Sunday night, he allegedly used the country-made pistol to shoot Sohail before hiding the weapon inside the house. To divert suspicion, Shahid allegedly fabricated a story about an intruder attack and joined relatives and local residents in taking the victim to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.Police also alleged that the accused instigated villagers to stage a protest by placing the body on the Dehradun-Paonta National Highway and blocking traffic, apparently to mislead investigators.“An FIR under the relevant provisions of the BNS for murder has been registered at Patel Nagar police station. A separate case has also been filed against Shahid and others in connection with the highway blockade,” the SSP said.Ends
