The Denver Broncos appeared close to signing free-agent running back J.K. Dobbins after an extended visit and dinner with team officials. Yet, surprisingly, no deal was reached.

With training camp approaching and questions lingering around their young backfield, Denver must now explore veteran alternatives because relying on inexperience alone could prove to be a risky gamble this season.

Veteran RB options the Broncos might lean on if Dobbins isn’t signed

If Dobbins walks away, Denver’s current running back room leans heavily on youth and uncertainty. RJ Harvey is a promising rookie, Audric Estime is entering his second year, and Jaleel McLaughlin is still fighting for consistency.

That’s a lot of hope, and not much experience. Here’s a look at veteran free agents the Broncos could turn to if Dobbins doesn’t return to the table:Gus EdwardsFresh off a season with the Chargers, Edwards is a power runner built for tough yardage and red-zone work. He torched the Broncos last season with two touchdowns and 68 yards — a performance Denver surely hasn’t forgotten. If they want a bruiser to complement their younger backs, Edwards fits the bill.

Jeff Wilson Jr.Wilson’s production has slowed since his 49ers days, but he’s still a versatile back who can contribute in both the run and pass game. He’s experienced, low-risk, and could bring balance to the Broncos’ young group. Think of him as a steady hand rather than a game-breaker.Nick ChubbYes, Chubb isn’t what he once was — but if the price is right, the gamble might be worth it. A former elite talent, Chubb could still have something left in the tank.

Signing him would be bold, and maybe even desperate, but in the right role, he might still flash that old magic. Also Read: Steelers secure Aaron Rodgers for 2025: Veteran QB signs $19.5 Million one-year dealThe Broncos still have time to make a move. Dobbins is only 26 and showed flashes of his old self last year. If healthy, he’s easily the best option on the market. But if the deal stays cold, Denver needs to act fast because relying solely on unproven talent in a division as competitive as the AFC West could be a recipe for disaster.
