Legendary England forward Wayne Rooney opened up on the time he went to dinner at the Beckhams’ household along with his wife Coleen back in the year 2003, when the former Manchester United player received his national call-up.
Rooney revealed that he and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard were invited for dinner at David and Victoria Beckham’s Madrid home and recollected his first encounter with the former Real Madrid icon’s son, Brooklyn.
“It was me, Lamps and couple more players," the 39-year-old began.
“We went to his house, me and Coleen, we were only 19 or something. We were like, ‘this is weird, what’s happening here?’
Rooney divulged that he bumped Brooklyn’s head in a funny anecdote.
“Had a walk around and he’s showing us round his house and then I open a door and his eldest boy, [Brooklyn] I bumped his head and he started crying I thought, ‘oh Jesus Christ’," Rooney exclaimed.
“Opened the door and bumped his head," Rooney, who earned 120 England caps and netted 53 times for the Three Lions recollected.
“But yeah that was surreal and we sat there with Becks and Victoria having dinner," he continued.
“We met up with Becks and Victoria, me and Coleen, when he was at Madrid and went for dinner then and we were having kebabs."
Rooney’s missus Coleen and Beckham’s wife Victoria ‘Posh’ of Spice Girls fame formed a part of the WAGS subculture that was prevalent in the 2000s.
“He’s obviously a great lad and Victoria’s such a lovely woman and funny. A lot funnier than people would think," the former Manchester United poster-boy said.
Rooney also went on talk about Sir Alex Ferguson’s 45-minute rule on international duty as he expressed he just wanted to play every minute of every game in trademark fashion.
“You want to be in every squad. I used to love getting called up to England, whether it was a friendly, whether it was a qualifier.
“I used to love going and meeting up with the players, preparing for the games. That’s probably the reason I got 120 caps, because I never used to pull out.
“I always remember Sir Alex Ferguson before we’d go in for some of the games, I’m sure he’d speak to the England manager as well," Roney continued.
“He’d be like: ‘Right, you, no more than 45 minutes. Make sure you come off after 45 minutes or you only play 45 minutes.’
“So, I’d get to England and I’d be like: ‘Boss, I want to play 90 minutes. I want to play the full game, don’t take me off,’ because I used to love playing.
“Some players were different and some players were protecting themselves with injuries as well, especially in the friendly games. But I used to love going," Rooney concluded.
