Bayer Leverkusen started life under new boss Kasper Hjulmand with a win over Eintracht Frankfurt at home on Saturday in the Bundesliga encounter between the sides.
Alejandro Grimaldo scored twice, while Patrick Schick netted from the spot to help the former champions to a 3-1 win over Frankfurt, despite red cards shown to Robert Andrich and Equi Fernandez.

Grimaldo curled a shot from outside the box 10 minutes in, and Patrik Schick converted a penalty, giving Leverkusen a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Can Uzun pulled one back for Frankfurt with 52 minutes gone, keeping the visitors in the match.
Leverkusen’s hopes of securing their first win of the season looked bleak when captain Robert Andrich received a second yellow card with half an hour left. Things worsened when Equi Fernandez was also sent off in stoppage time.
However, Grimaldo, who took over the captain’s armband after Andrich’s dismissal, once again curled in a free kick with eight minutes remaining to seal a famous victory.
“In the second half, we were missing a player, and the game was difficult," Schick told Sky Germany, adding, “the defenders did an unbelievable job today."
The striker, who scored a penalty for the second consecutive league match, praised Grimaldo’s free-kick ability, saying, “this position for him is like scoring from the spot. He has this technique, this top spin, and he does it perfectly."
Appointed on Monday, replacing former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who was sacked after just two games, Hjulmand opened his account with a win.
“What a game," said the 53-year-old Danish coach, adding, “we didn’t have many chances, but we had energy."
Grimaldo, widely expected to leave Leverkusen this summer, put the hosts ahead just 10 minutes in, curling a free kick over the wall, hitting the post, and then the back of goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
Schick, another key player from Bayer’s incredible unbeaten season in 2023-24, doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time, coolly converting from the spot after Nathan Tella was fouled.
Uzun reduced the deficit when his strike deflected past Leverkusen goalkeeper Flekken with 52 minutes played.
Germany midfielder Andrich’s second yellow for a harmless but lazy studs-up challenge increased the pressure on the home side, who had not won a league match since April.
Leverkusen lost another player in stoppage time when Fernandez was sent off, but the hosts scored again when Grimaldo showcased his set-piece prowess, threading the ball expertly into the net.
The result extended Leverkusen’s strong record against Frankfurt, particularly at home. Leverkusen have now beaten Frankfurt in their past six games and have not lost to them at home since 2013.
