Union Minister of State for MSME and Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje stressed that a robust quality infrastructure was vital to accelerate industrial growth, enhance global competitiveness, and safeguard consumer interests.
Speaking at the World Standards Day 2025 celebrations organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Bengaluru Branch Office, at the J.N. Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), on October 16, she commended BIS’s outreach through Standards Clubs and awareness programmes, describing them as crucial to nurturing a ‘quality-first’ culture across the country.
Ms. Karandlaje urged the development of more sector-specific standards to position India as a global leader in manufacturing, trade, and innovation. “Standards are not merely technical specifications. They are instruments that determine how competitive our industries can be in global markets,” she said.
Bengaluru Rural MP C.N. Manjunath, who also addressed the gathering, underscored the critical need for adopting and implementing standards across diverse sectors, such as healthcare, research, and manufacturing, to achieve sustainable development and ensure public health and well-being.
“Standardisation bridges the gap between innovation and real-world application, particularly in areas like medical technology and diagnostics,” he said, adding that adherence to standards was essential for promoting sustainability and public well-being.
The event, themed ‘Shared Vision for a Better World – Spotlight on SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals’, brought together policymakers, industry representatives, and academicians.
Senior BIS officials, including Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General (Southern region), and Sushma Rao Mantradi, Director and Head of BIS Bengaluru Branch Office, participated in the programme.
Technical sessions, felicitation of Standards Champions, and cultural performances by students from Standards Clubs marked the occasion.
