Burglars decamped with goods worth around ₹ 10 lakh including five sovereigns of gold jewellery, groceries, perishable items, furniture and cash from nine shops at Velakalnatham village near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) on Wednesday.

Police said that K. Rajesh (52), who runs a pharmacy on the stretch, came to his outlet at around 9 a.m when he noticed the locks were broken. He went inside the shop and found medicines were ransacked from the racks. Sealed boxes of medicines including syrups were missing. A billing machine, a computer and around ₹ 50,000 cash were stolen.

As he came out of the shop, Rajesh was told by other shopkeepers on the stretch that shops including bakery, tea stall, grocery, garment outlet, fancy store and vegetable shop were also burgled.

Shopkeepers found that burglars had also damaged CCTV cameras in the shops and took away the hard disk with them. High quality garments like silk sarees and dhotis were also stolen.

Based on the alert, Natrampalli police inspected the spot. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs were roped in . A case was registered. Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. CCTV footage on the route is also being analysed. A probe is underway.
