A bus carrying four people fell into Paris’ Seine river on Thursday, officials said, adding that all have been rescued.
According to the transport authority for the Ile-de-France region, the bus fell into the Seine in Juvisy-sur-Orge, south of Paris. The incident tok place reportedly after a trainee driver reportedly made a handling error and smashed into a parked car which also fell into the river.
While officials said there was no one in the car at the time, those in the bus were – the driver, an instructor and two passengers.
After the incident, specialist divers were seen jumping into the waterway and rushing to the submerged bus and all four were hauled from the bus while it continued to sink after crashing into the water at around 9.30am (local time), The Sun reported.
“The bus was leaving the bus station when the driver lost control and hit a parked car," Juvisy Mayor Lamia Bensarsa Reda said. “It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this. I think I’ve just experienced the worst day of my life."
“Luckily, there were no casualties thanks to the quick response of the police and emergency services," she added.
Following the incident, the Mayor said, local transport links were disrupted.
“The challenge now is to keep traffic flowing smoothly and allow emergency services and the police to work in the best possible conditions," she said. “They reacted very quickly and were able to get people to safety."
