The State Cabinet on Thursday gave approval for handing over four acres of land on the Hebbal campus of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University to the judiciary for the construction of residential quarters for judges of the High Court of Karnataka.

This was announced by Law Minister H.K. Patil in Bengaluru while briefing presspersons after a Cabinet meeting.

When asked about the fate of the hi-tech veterinary hospital that was proposed to be built on this land, the Minister said the decision to hand over this land for the judiciary would not affect the proposed veterinary hospital project as the hospital would come up on alternative land within the campus.

According to sources in the government, this land which is located next to the Nyaya Grama, the residential quarters for Karnataka High Court judges, would be used to build an annexe. It is expected to have about 40 houses.

The proposal had earlier drawn criticism from veterinary experts and alumni of the university who had expressed concern that the measure would decrease availability of land for the academic and research works of the university.

The university too had opposed the government’s proposal. The university authorities had stated before the government that they cannot give up the land as they want to build a super-speciality veterinary hospital and pet park on it.
