Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada cannot “rule out participation" in the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel against Iran. His remarks come after he previously stated that the US-Israeli strikes on Iran appeared inconsistent with international law.

Carney earlier said the attacks that triggered the conflict did not seem to comply with international legal standards. His latest comments have drawn alarm from critics, who said he refused to categorically rule out Canada joining the war despite acknowledging legal concerns.

Explaining Canada’s stance, Carney said the country’s position on developments in the Middle East remains clear. He described the Islamic Republic of Iran as a principal source of instability and terror across the region and criticised its human rights record.

Carney said Iran must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons. He added that Canada and its international partners have repeatedly called on Iran to end its nuclear programme, including discussions at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis and through United Nations sanctions reimposed last September.
