Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday offered deepest sympathies for the “devastating car blast" near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, which claimed the lives of eight people.

“I was shocked to hear of the devastating car blast near the Red Fort in Delhi last evening. I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed in this horrific explosion, and wish a fast and full recovery to all who were injured. Canada stands with the people of Delhi and India during this time of mourning," Carney said in a post on X.

At 6:52 pm on Monday, a white Hyundai i20 car pulled up to a red light at Subhas Marg, a crowded part of old Delhi, and exploded within seconds, sending shockwaves across the country. The blast came hours after the Haryana Police on Monday morning, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, busted a “white-collar" terror module and arrested Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr Muzammil Shakil, close aides of Dr Umar.

The police also seized 2,900 kg of explosives and weapons such as assault rifles and pistols. This seizure, according to the sources, triggered Dr Umar Mohammad – a close associate of Dr Adeel believed to be radicalised – to carry out a blast in the national capital.

Eight people, including Dr Muzammil and two fellow doctors, have been arrested for allegedly being part of a white-collar terror module involving the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, spanning across Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

In response to the incident, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered heightened security measures across major cities in India.
