National Cancer Institute (NCI), Nagpur, has volunteered to treat an elderly woman cancer patient, who was found abandoned by her family in Mumbai’s Aarey area.

NCI general secretary and CEO Shailesh Joglekar said he got to know about the hapless woman (her identity withheld for privacy) through media reports. The NCI got in touch with one of the editors and sought details of the cancer patient and expressed its desire to treat her at NCI’s Nagpur facility.

“When I learnt about it, I thought we could help the distressed woman. I called up one of the editors in Mumbai to know more about the ailing woman, and said that, if permitted, the NCI would bring the woman here in Nagpur for treatment. NCI will ensure the patient’s complete cancer care,” said Mr. Joglekar, who is the general secretary of Dr. Aabaji Thatte Sewa Aur Anusandhan Sanstha, a charitable trust that runs the NCI.

“She was admitted to Cooper Hospital, and her condition is stable. We are yet to understand how she reached Aarey when she lived in Kandivali East. The spot where she was found has no CCTV cameras; however, we are scrutinising CCTV footage near the house. In the meanwhile, we have recorded a statement from his grandson,” Ravindra Patil, Senior Police Inspector from Aarey police station, told The Hindu.
