Police in Kerala’s Kannur district have registered a case against RSS workers for celebrating the anniversary of the killing of a SDPI worker. The incident took place in Kannavam, where RSS workers cut a cake and shared a video of the celebration on social media platform Instagram.
Salahuddin, a member of SDPI (political wing of the Popular Front of India) was hacked to death by a group of men, allegedly belonging to the RSS, in Kannavam, Kannur in 2020.
The cake bore the words “Abhimaanam Kannavam Swayamsevakar” (Pride Kannavam Swayamsevaks), while the video was shared with a caption that read, “Amid thousands of losses, it was a day the strong hearted Swayamsevaks in Kannur felt happy from heart. The day the SDPI worker in Kannavam was killed.”
Kannavam police said the celebration was held on September 8 and have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 192. According to the First Information Report (FIR), “anti social elements cut a cake and celebrated the killing of the SDPI worker with the intention of creating political clashes in a peaceful atmosphere.”
Salahuddin was reportedly one of the accused in the murder Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) member Shyam Prasad in 2018. Shyam was hacked to death by a gang with machetes in Kannur while he was travelling back home in a motorcycle. ABVP had later blamed the PFI for the murder.
