Vice President JD Vance, long known for his strong anti-intervention stance, has now emerged as the central figure leading the Trump administration’s effort to end the war with Iran—an assignment he neither sought nor expected.

Vance was in Budapest recently, focused on political outreach and campaigning for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, when President Donald Trump tapped him for one of the most consequential diplomatic missions of his career: heading high-stakes peace talks with Iran in Islamabad.

The decision instantly placed the vice president at the heart of a conflict he had previously tried to keep the US away from. A known skeptic of foreign military interventions, Vance had earlier expressed concerns about deep US involvement in West Asia wars and had sought to distance himself from the unfolding conflict in its early phase. He, however, is directly linked to its outcome now.

According a senior administration official, Trump’s move to appoint Vance is seen as an attempt to give weight and political authority to the negotiations, which are expected to be the most significant US-Iran engagement since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The talks are being held in Pakistan with mediation from regional partners, and also include senior US officials and special envoys, reported Wall Street Journal.

Officials say Vance’s role has expanded rapidly in recent weeks, reflecting Trump’s growing reliance on him for sensitive assignments beyond domestic policy.

Peace In West Asia: A Difficult Mission

The conflict has already exposed deep divisions within US political circles, including within Trump’s own support base, where opposition to foreign wars remains strong. Vance, once aligned with that skepticism, now finds himself defending a process that could define the outcome of the ongoing tension in the West Asia.

Sources suggest the vice president is aware of the stakes, as the negotiations could either establish him as a successful dealmaker on the global stage or tie him politically to a prolonged and unpopular conflict.

The talks come at a time of heightened tension in the region, with fragile ceasefire arrangements under pressure and both sides still deeply divided over core issues such as nuclear enrichment, sanctions relief, inclusion of Lebanon in peace deal, regional security guarantees amid other key issues.

For Vance, the challenge is immediate, complex, and politically loaded. A war he once questioned is now the responsibility he must try to end.
