Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Monday stressed that India’s response to future security threats must be “coordinated, swift and decisive", given the technological advancements and the evolving nature of modern warfare.

Speaking ahead of a two-day tri-services conclave ‘Ran Samvad’ at the Army War College in Mhow, Gen Chauhan highlighted the importance of synergy among the Army, Navy and Air Force.

“At a time when the character of conflict is evolving rapidly across land, sea, air, cyber and space, our response must be unified, swift and decisive," he said.

“The future battlefield does not recognise service boundaries. It demands joint thinking, joint planning and joint execution," he added.

The CDS said the Ran Samvad seminar aims to provide a platform for serving officers to lead discussions on the realities of modern warfare and strengthen collective military preparedness.

“This seminar is not about showcasing power. It’s about shaping clarity of purpose, unity of effort and shared operational understanding across services," he remarked.

The event, scheduled for August 26–27, will feature Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivering the plenary address on the final day, while Gen Chauhan will address the opening session.

Several joint doctrines, along with a technology and capability roadmap, will also be unveiled.

‘India A Peace-Loving Nation, But…’

At the Ran Samvad conclave, CDS Chauhan underlined that India’s commitment to peace must be backed by strength.

“India has always stood on the side of peace. We are a peace-loving nation, but don’t get mistaken, we cannot be pacifists," he said, adding that “peace without power is utopian."

Citing a Latin maxim, Gen. Chauhan remarked, “If you want peace, prepare for war," as he stressed the importance of military preparedness in safeguarding national security.

According to organisers, Ran Samvad is a first-of-its-kind initiative curated by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies, with support from the Army Training Command.

Each session will be led by serving officers sharing operational insights from contemporary battlefields.

The conclave will cover themes such as information warfare, grey zone conflicts, integrated operations and next-generation combat technologies.

Top commanders from all three services, defence industry leaders and global security experts are expected to participate.
