Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday (October 13, 2025) hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre, accusing it of stepmotherly treatment towards Himachal Pradesh.
The Union government discriminates against Himachal Pradesh because it is ruled by the Congress party, Ms. Gandhi said. Scores of families had been displaced and widespread damage had occurred in the hill State during the recent rain-related disasters, yet no assistance had been provided by the Centre, despite repeated appeals made by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Congress leader said.
Ms. Gandhi was in Shimla attending an event where the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi, unveiled the statue of former Himachal CM, the late Virbhadra Singh.
Mr. Sukhu has been personally supporting the affected families, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi said, contrasting this with the Centre’s focus on electoral politics over people’s welfare.
Mr. Sukhu welcomed Ms. Sonia Gandhi and Ms. Priyanka Gandhi, recalling the three decades he had worked alongside Singh in the Congress party. Virbhadra Singh was a leader of public welfare, roads, and development, the Chief Minister said.
