Days after restructuring the ‘Syndicate and Senate’ of Panjab University, the Union Ministry of Education on Friday (November 7, 2025) decided to rescind the order regarding changing the University’s constitution and composition of the senate and syndicate.

Based on recommendation of a High Level Committee (HLC) set up on March 2, 2021 by the Chancellor of the University and consultations with various stakeholders, the government of India in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1), read with sub-section (2) and (3), of the section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966 (31 of 1966), issued a notification to modify the constitution and composition of the Senate and Syndicate of the Panjab University.

After the order was issued, several feedbacks were received from stakeholders like students, teachers, former V-Cs and the current V-C of the Panjab University. The Ministry of Education also considered the inputs received in meetings with various student organisations, said an official statement on Friday.

“Having regard to the above, it has now been decided by the Ministry of Education that the aforesaid order changing the constitution & composition of the senate and syndicate shall stand rescinded,” the statement added.

Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and students organisations had cornered the central government for its decision to restructure the ‘Senate and Syndicate’ of Panjab University.
