Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy said that the Centre should increase the fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane in order to help its growers.
Speaking to presspersons during his visit to Shivamogga on Friday, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said that the responsibility to fix the FRP for sugarcane lies with the Centre. “For many years, growers had been demanding for an increase in the price. However, the Centre has not responded so far. The Members of Parliament and the five Ministers elected from the State are not making any efforts to resolve the issue,” he said.
On the other hand, Ministers from the State government met the protesters, while the Chief Minister held a meeting with sugar factory owners and the protesting farmers, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said. The State government had been making all efforts to ensure that the farmers are benefited, he added.
