Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan will face each other in Saturday’s Champions League final. PSG is aiming to win the prestigious European club football title for the first time, while Inter is seeking their fourth title.

The match will take place at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, which has a capacity of 75,000, and is set to kick off at 9:00 pm (1900 GMT). Inter brings experience to the game, while PSG is making their second appearance in the final since the club’s transformative Qatari takeover in 2011.

The winner will succeed Real Madrid as champions. Excitement is at a fever pitch in Paris, where around 40,000 fans will watch on giant screens at PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, and a significant police presence is planned throughout the city.

The European season’s climax presents a fascinating clash of styles and team-building philosophies—between a traditional European powerhouse and a modern state-owned superclub. Despite heavy investment, PSG has yet to win the Champions League, with their closest attempt being in 2020 when they lost to Bayern in Lisbon during the pandemic. This was despite having Kylian Mbappe and Neymar on the team. The arrival of Lionel Messi a year later did not help either, and their impressive run to Munich this season comes after Mbappe followed the South American superstars out of the club.

Do Something Historic’

“There have been great times and difficult times, but we have a glorious opportunity to do something remarkable and historic for this club," said captain Marquinhos on Friday.

Under Spanish coach Luis Enrique, a dynamic young PSG side has taken Europe by storm in recent months. A comeback win in January against 2023 champions Manchester City acted as a catalyst. PSG then knocked out three more Premier League sides – Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal – on their way to the final and secured a French league and cup double. Ousmane Dembele has been their star player with 33 goals, supported by forwards Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Other standout players include Achraf Hakimi, a former Inter player, and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“My biggest motivation is to make history for Paris and give the city and club something to celebrate," said Luis Enrique, who seeks his second Champions League title, 10 years after leading Barcelona to victory.

If PSG wins, they will become only the second French team to win the competition. Marseille’s 1993 triumph also occurred in Munich, at the old Olympic Stadium, against Inter’s city rivals AC Milan.

Italian Experience

Inter was the last Italian team to win, with Jose Mourinho’s side defeating Bayern in Madrid in 2010. They also won the title twice in the 1960s. Coach Simone Inzaghi was in charge when Inter reached the final two years ago but narrowly lost to City. Eight players from that team might start again, and the experienced lineup features three players aged 36 or over. Inter beat Bayern in the quarter-finals and overcame Barcelona in a thrilling semi-final.

Captained by Argentinian forward Lautaro Martinez, Inter will play in a 3-5-2 formation, contrasting with PSG’s 4-3-3 setup. “Last time against Manchester City, we produced a top-class performance but didn’t win. This time, we hope to be more switched on," said midfielder Nicolo Barella, recalling the 2023 final. “These matches come down to fine margins, but we will try to bring home the trophy. That is the dream for all of us. After a season like this one, I think we deserve to win this final," added Barella, whose team narrowly missed out on the Serie A title to Napoli on the last day of the season.

Remarkably, this is the first competitive encounter between the two teams. While fans flocked to Munich on Friday, fan zones have been set up in three locations around Paris beyond PSG’s stadium. More than 5,000 police officers will be deployed in the city and its suburbs during the final, following violence after PSG’s semi-final win against Arsenal. In Milan, tens of thousands of fans will also watch the game at Inter’s San Siro stadium.
