In a chilling murder case from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, a young man from Chandigarh was found dead in a private hotel room near the Dhali tunnel in Sanjauli on Friday morning. The incident has once again raised serious questions over the law and order situation in the state.

The victim, identified as Akash Sharma, a resident of Sector 26, Chandigarh, was allegedly killed by his cousin, Arjun, who hails from Sector 10, Panchkula. Both had checked into room number 302 of the hotel on Wednesday, June 11, reportedly for a leisure trip.

According to the police, the two were involved in a heated argument that escalated into a violent altercation. In a gruesome turn of events, Arjun is said to have smashed a beer bottle, struck Akash on the head, and then used a shard from the broken bottle to slit his cousin’s throat.

The murder is believed to have occurred in the early hours of Friday. CCTV footage accessed by investigators shows Arjun leaving the hotel on his motorcycle around 5:18 AM, moments after the killing. However, the escape was short-lived; he was arrested by the police within hours and is currently being interrogated.

The Dhali police, who were alerted shortly after the incident, arrived at the scene and took custody of the body. A post-mortem examination has been ordered, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Dhali Police Station.

Police officials confirmed that they are combing through CCTV footage from the hotel premises and interrogating hotel staff to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the murder.

This horrifying incident adds to an already grim statistic – 37 murders have been reported in Himachal Pradesh in just the first six months of 2025. The latest case, marked by familial betrayal and senseless violence, underscores growing concerns over public safety, even in regions traditionally considered peaceful.
