A change is likely in the national leadership of the Students Federation of India (SFI), which is holding its 18th all-India conference in Kozhikode from June 27 to 30.
According to sources, the current committee, led by V.P. Sanu and Mayukh Biswas, the incumbent president and general secretary, respectively, will make way for a new one this time. They have been holding these posts for more than two terms now. Nitheesh Narayanan from Kannur, who is currently the national vice-president, is learnt to be considered for one of the top posts.
Functionaries of the organising committee, including Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas and CPI(M) district secretary M. Mehboob, told the media on Monday (June 16) that Kerala and Kozhikode were hosting the conference after a gap of 22 years. Veteran journalist Shashi Kumar and M.K. Raina, theatre artiste and writer, would open the delegates’ conference at the Kozhikode beach on June 27. A total of 519 delegates would attend the event.
The organisers said that seminars and other socio-cultural events were held across the State ahead of the conference. Elamaram Kareem, State general secretary, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, would open a seminar on the impacts of neoliberalism at the Town Hall on June 20. An exhibition featuring the history of students’ movements would begin near the KSRTC bus station on June 23.
On the concluding day of the conference on June 30, a students’ rally will be taken out. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would open a public event thereafter, the organisers added.
