Chase Stegall died on June 2, 2025, in his dorm room at DePaul University in Chicago. He was only twenty years old. The Cook County Medical Examiner claims his death was brought on by something called SUDEP, or "sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
" DePaul men's soccer team featured Chase as a sophomore midfield player. In 16 of the 17 games the team played last year, he took field. Many knew him for his brilliant and compassionate nature. Milton "Milt" Stegall, his father, is a CFL and NFL football player and member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
Chase Stegall’s Cause of Death and Memories of Him
Chase Stegall was found unresponsive in his residence hall on the morning of June 2, 2025, at DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus in Chicago.
The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed his cause of death as “sudden unexpected death in epilepsy” and said the death was natural.
DePaul President Rob Manuel sent an email saying, “Chase was known for his warmth, strength of character, and vibrant presence.” words many at school remember him by. His coach, Mark Plotkin, called him a “dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend.” The wider DePaul community said they were heartbroken.
Chase Stegall was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Chicago for college. He played in most of the soccer games last season, even scoring a goal against Drake on September 2, 2024. In February, Chase shared in an essay how he once had a seizure and how his team and coaches supported him, it showed how much he trusted the people around him.Chase Stegall is survived by his parents, Milton and Darlene Stegall, and his younger brother Collin .

It occurs even when no one witnesses their seizures. Though uncommon, it is heartbreaking; professionals are still working to grasp why it occurs. Doctors say lowering the chance depends on good control of seizures. For people living with epilepsy, openly discussing SUDEP, putting in place safety precautions like sharing a room, and having medical strategies can also prove of use.
