Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was left frustrated by forward Liam Delap’s late red card in his side’s EFL League Cup triumph over Wolves on Wednesday.
Delap, who returned from a hamstring injury after nearly two months on the sidelines as a second-half change, got booked when he pushed Yerson Mosquera in the 79th minute and went on to pick up his second yellow for a foul on Emmanuel Agbadou just seven minutes later.
The sending off was Chelsea’s fifth red card in the last nine matches and the Italian boss was left fuming.
“For sure, today also we had a very stupid red card that is completely unnecessary," Maresca said.
“The card was absolutely deserved yes. Stupid foul. Because it’s two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both I think we can avoid," he added.
“After the yellow card, I told him four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player that when he’s inside the pitch, he’ll be playing the game for himself and he struggles to realise and to listen around him," the 45-year-old said.
Maresca, however, added that he does not intend to punish players for being sent off, instead focusing on rectifying their mistakes as he drew parallels with his personal family life and how he treats his kids who err.
“I have four kids, when they do something wrong, I do not punish them. I try to teach them to do the right things. I try to do this with the players too," the Chelsea boss had said..
Chelsea, who have 14 points and occupy the 9th place in the English top-flight, take on London rivals Tottenham on Sunday in a charged Premier League encounter in their upcoming fixture.
