Chelsea FC became the first-ever Premier League team in history to have four different Under-21 players on the scoresheet in a match across competitions. Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, Estevao Willian, and Jamie Gittens scored for the Blues against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the League Cup on Wednesday (October 29) night for a stunning, roller-coaster 4-3 win to advance to the quarter-finals.

Santos and George put Chelsea two ahead in the first 15 minutes of the match. Brazilian Estevao executed the perfect chip in the 41st minute as the visitors dominated the Premier League’s only winless team in the first half with slick transitions and excellent conversion of high turnovers, thanks to some poor defending.

Wolves came back into the game in the second half with goals from Toluwalase Arokodare and David Wolfe in similar situations. Chelsea striker Liam Delap then couldn’t control his emotions and went on to get a second yellow — the fifth red card of the season already — giving the hosts more control. Gittens ended all hope with a wonder-trivela goal in the 89th minute. Wolfe’s second did make it 3-4 in extra time, but it was too late.

“I am very happy with the first half, and very upset with the second half," Coach Enzo Maresca said. “In the first half, we were very good. It’s always complicated to go away and score three goals. We were playing nice football, creating chances. We didn’t concede anything. The game was completely under control at 3-0.:

“Second half we were not doing the right things. The first goal we conceded opened the game and gave them a boost and the energy to come back into the game. We panicked a little bit. We could have avoided all three of the goals we conceded. But it’s part of the journey of this team, this squad, to gain experience to get better and better."

He was fuming at Delap, calling it stupid and even accusing the striker of ‘playing the game for himself’.

“Absolutely, yes. Stupid foul. We can avoid that. The three goals we conceded, I think all of them we can avoid. For sure, today we also had a very stupid red card that was completely unnecessary. After the first yellow card I told him [Delap] four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player who, when he’s on the pitch, is probably playing the game for himself and struggles to realise and listen to those around him."

Chelsea will paly Cardiff City away in the quarter-finals.
