Chennai Teen Electrocuted After Stepping Into Pool Of Rainwater, Locals Stage Protest

The boy stepped into a pool of stagnant rainwater on the road in Chennai's Tiruvottiyur area and died of electrocution, officials said.

A 17-year-old boy died of electrocution in Chennai’s Tiruvottiyur area on Wednesday while returning home after finishing his tuition classes, officials said.

The teenager was identified as Nafeel, who stepped into a pool of stagnant rainwater near Thangal Peer Pailvan Dargah on his way back home. After this, he lost consciousness and was rescued using wooden logs and pipes.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. His body was later sent to a government hospital for a post-mortem.

The locals were enraged by the incident as they alleged “negligence" by the authorities. They staged a protest, claiming that their repeated complaints to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) about the live wire were ignored.

The protesters blocked traffic for nearly two hours, demanding answers from the administration. They were persuaded by the police officials who promised to take action on the matter.

Northern parts of the city, including Tiruvottiyur, experienced a sudden spell of rain earlier in the evening, causing waterlogging in several areas. Residents said that the water had become electrically charged because of a damaged underground cable.

Father of the victim boy, Altaf Hussain, alleged negligence on the part of the authorities and claimed that multiple calls were made for power to be cut, however, the efforts were met with no response.

“This wasn’t an accident—it was pure negligence and a failure to do their duty. We called several times asking them to cut the power, but no one responded," he said.
