Cheteshwar Pujara has recalled India’s last Test in England in 2022 in Birmingham, when they lost after setting a 378-run target in the final innings, saying there are a few differences this time around.

“It does (play a part in the mind), am sure India will be thinking about it [the 2022 drubbing when Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow smashed hundreds]. At the same time, it’s a different pitch and different conditions. Also, there is not much time left in this game,” Pujara said on air during his BBC TMS commentary.

England had ended the fourth day then on 259/3 in 57.0 overs and Root and Bairstow returned on the final day to hasten the end. Pujara noted how the time factor is different this time.

“In that game, there was enough time for England team to chase the total down. Although they chased it in 79-odd overs, but in this game there is a little bit of rain around tomorrow.”

Pujara said that India would look to set a target of 400-plus before they ask England to bat. “If India can get to 400-plus as quickly as possible, they won’t mind bowling a few overs in the end. We have to wait and watch. India are 320 ahead – need another 80 runs. Second new ball you can score runs quickly or slow things down if you lose couple of wickets.”

That 2022 loss would have hurt the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, who picked 2 wickets while conceding 74 runs. Mohammed Shami gave away 64 runs in just 15 overs while Mohammed Siraj leaked 98 runs in 15 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur (65 runs in 11 overs) also didn’t impress.
