The Los Angeles Chargers opened the 2025 NFL season in spectacular fashion, snapping their seven-game skid against the Kansas City Chiefs with a 27-21 victory in São Paulo, Brazil.
Justin Herbert delivered a commanding performance, reminding fans why he’s one of the league’s most dangerous quarterbacks. With this win, the Chargers not only ended Kansas City’s 17-game one-score streak but also made a loud statement in the AFC West.
Justin Herbert leads the Chargers past the Chiefs
Herbert was electric from the start. Completing 25 of 34 passes, he racked up 318 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 35 rushing yards. His 19-yard scramble in the closing minutes sealed the win, showing the poise of a quarterback ready to change the narrative.
Quinten Johnston emerged as a difference-maker, hauling in five catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Veteran receiver Keenan Allen also chipped in with seven receptions for 68 yards and a score.
This performance puts Herbert in elite company, as only the third quarterback in Chargers history to throw for more than 300 yards in a season opener. More importantly, it gave Los Angeles its first win over Kansas City since 2021—a clear signal that Jim Harbaugh’s influence is already reshaping this team’s identity.
Chiefs face rare setback against the Chargers
Patrick Mahomes did everything possible to keep Kansas City in the fight, throwing for 258 yards with a touchdown while adding 57 yards and another score on the ground. But the night was marred early when rookie wideout Xavier Worthy exited with a shoulder injury after colliding with Travis Kelce. The absence left Mahomes short on weapons, and the Chiefs failed to reach the end zone in the first half for the second straight game. For Kansas City, the loss snaps an incredible streak of 17 consecutive one-score wins, dating back to Christmas Day 2023. Now, at 0-1, they face a quick turnaround against the Philadelphia Eagles—a rematch of their Super Bowl loss just months ago. For the Chargers, meanwhile, this victory wasn’t just about breaking a streak; it was about proving they can finally stand toe-to-toe with the Chiefs. Also Read: Chiefs’ Travis Kelce enjoys star-studded Brazil moment with Odell Beckham Jr. and Neymar ahead of opener
