In a major pre-festive crackdown, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized Chinese-origin firecrackers worth Rs 4.82 crore during a covert operation code-named “Operation Fire Trail."
The operation, carried out by the agency’s Mumbai Zonal Unit, exposed a sophisticated smuggling network attempting to push banned fireworks into India.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted a 40-foot container at Nhava Sheva Port, which had been declared as carrying “leggings."
The shipment had originated from China and was destined for the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Ankleshwar, Gujarat. Upon thorough inspection, officers discovered the container concealed 46,640 pieces of firecrackers and fireworks, hidden behind a superficial layer of garments. The entire consignment was immediately seized.
Subsequent searches led to the recovery of incriminating documents that shed light on the modus operandi of the syndicate. Following swift action, one key suspect linked to the case was arrested in Veraval, Gujarat.
Officials confirmed that importing firecrackers into India is restricted under the Foreign Trade Policy, requiring prior approvals and valid licences from both the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) in accordance with the Explosives Rules, 2008.
Authorities have consistently warned that illegal imports of firecrackers not only breach trade and safety regulations but also pose serious risks — including explosions, fires, and environmental hazards. Such contraband endangers port workers, shipping infrastructure, and logistics operations, they said.
A senior DRI official stated, “This operation once again reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding national security and public safety. The smuggling of explosive materials like firecrackers will not be tolerated under any circumstances."
With Diwali approaching, the seizure underscores the heightened vigilance of enforcement agencies against the illegal trade of Chinese firecrackers entering the country through deceptive documentation and concealed shipments. The DRI has intensified its nationwide efforts to trace and dismantle the larger networks involved.
An investigation is currently underway to uncover the financial trail and broader nexus behind the seized consignment.
