Chinese FM Wang Yi to visit India for high-level BRICS meet

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi will visit India to attend the 16th meeting of the BRICS National Security Advisors (NSA) and High Representatives, Beijing said on Thursday.“At the invitation of India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, will attend the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security to be held in India from June 22 to 23,” the Chinese foreign ministry said on X.The development comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing, including previous meetings between the two sides on border-related issues and broader bilateral ties.Wang Yi had earlier visited New Delhi last year and held talks with NSA Ajit Doval at the 24th meeting of the special representatives in August.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides had then noted that peace and tranquillity had been maintained in the India-China border areas since the 23rd SR Talks and stressed the importance of maintaining stability along the frontier. The MEA had also said both countries viewed each other as development partners rather than rivals and emphasised that differences should not escalate into disputes. The upcoming visits are being seen in the context of ongoing efforts to stabilise ties between the two countries following a series of high-level engagements between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at multilateral forums, including the SCO summit in Tianjin in 2025.

During the summit, both world leaders welcomed the positive momentum and progress in the bilateral relations of the countries since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024.In a statement after the meeting, MEA noted, “A stable relationship and cooperation between India and China and their 2.8 billion peoples on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity are necessary for the growth and development of the two countries, as well as for a multipolar world and a multi-polar Asia befitting the trends of the 21st century."
