In a shocking incident, a minor girl studying in Class 9 at a government-run residential school in Yadgir district gave birth to a baby boy in the wee hours of Thursday (August 28, 2025).
According to Shashidhar Kosumbe, member of the Karnataka State Commission for Child Rights, the girl gave birth in a toilet in the residential school at 2.30 a.m.
He further said that action had been initiated to register a suo moto case with the Commission and the district Child Rights Protection Officer had been direcetd to lodge a complaint with the jurisdiction police station for legal action.
Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar rushed to the hospital where the minor mother and baby were being treated. “I have discussed the issue with the concerned department officers and directed them to file a complaint with the police and also submit a detailed report immediately,” Mr Bhoyar told The Hindu over the phone.
He also said that negligence on the part of the residential school employees, including the warden, was found prima facie. He would recommend the Karnataka Residential Educational Institution Society (KREIS) to take action against officials, he added.
Case to be registered under POCSO Act
Pruthvik Shankar, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that a case will be registered under the POCSO Act against the principal, warden, staff nurse and also the brother of the victim, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita will also be added after enquiry.
He added that the age of the minor girl is 17 years, according to her educational documents.
The minor mother and infant are currently being treated and are out of danger. They will be shifted to Bala Mandir later in accordance with the procedure.
Chief Executive Officer Lavish Ordia accompanied the DC and the SP during their visit to the hospital.
