Bayern Munich secured their place in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Argentina’s Boca Juniors on Friday, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise.
After Paris Saint-Germain lost to Botafogo and Chelsea fell to Flamengo, Bayern broke the trend of European teams succumbing to South American opponents with a strong performance in their Group C match.
Hard Rock Stadium was filled with 63,587 passionate Boca fans, who created an electrifying atmosphere.
However, Bayern quickly set about silencing the crowd as Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka dominated the central midfield, while Bayern’s attacking movement stretched Boca’s defence.
Bayern thought they had taken the lead in the eighth minute when Olise’s corner went untouched into the net. However, VAR revealed Serge Gnabry obstructed Boca goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, disallowing the goal.
Ten minutes later, Bayern broke through. Boca failed to clear, and Kane scored with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Despite Boca’s ample efforts, Bayern stayed in control, with Kane nearly making it 2-0 with a dangerous free-kick that dipped just over the bar. Yet after the interval, Boca pressed on and equalised in the 66th minute through Miguel Merentiel.
With six minutes left, Olise scored decisively after Kane’s assist, securing the win for the Bavarians. This victory marked the first loss for a South American team in the competition, leaving Boca with one point.
Bayern now have a maximum of six points, having crushed Auckland City 10-0 in their opening game. Portugal’s Benfica are in second place with four points.
