The 218th edition of the flower show was inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Lalbagh Botanical Garden on Thursday. The theme for this year’s flower show, organised by the Horticulture Department is Veera Rani Kittur Chennamma and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna.

After inaugurating the show, Mr. Siddaramaiah recalled the feats of bravery of both Chennamma and Rayanna and said that it was important to commemorate them. He also said that this year marks the 200th year since the victory of Chennamma in the first war against the British.

“Sangolli Rayanna belonged to the backward caste of Kurubas. Just like him, there were many soldiers and courtsmen from backward castes during Chennamma’s rule. She was secular and together with all those people, ruled Kittur. Chennamma was a brave and courageous woman,” the Chief Minister said.

A huge floral model of the fort of Kittur, made out of roses and chrysanthemums, is the central piece of attraction at the Glass House along with the model of a horse-mounted Chennamma and a standing model of Rayanna, along with several other models of the Kittur kingdom.

The show will be open to public from Friday and will conclude on August 18 and around 10 lakh to 11 lakh people are expected to visit the show.
