CM Mohan Charan Majhi appeals to people to prevent suicides

A workshop was organised by the psychology department of Utkal University on Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday

Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi appealed to people to prevent suicides on Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday. “Suicide is not a solution; it is a sign of mental weakness. On this Suicide Prevention Day, let’s pledge to overcome problems, cherish life, and work towards creating widespread social awareness to prevent suicide,” said Majhi on his social media account X.He said the govt is always there to help people solve any small or big problem they face. “If someone is blackmailing or harassing you on a personal level, immediately inform the authorities. Exemplary action will be taken,” said Majhi, adding, “Suicide is not a solution. It brings unspeakable grief and misery to families forever.”The sports and youth services department also organised a World Suicide Prevention Day programme here on Wednesday.

In the presence of sports and youth services minister Suryabanshi Suraj, youths took oath that they will not take extreme steps like suicide at any point in life. The minister read out the pledge, and students repeated it.“We all should create awareness among people to prevent suicide. Everybody should turn into a life saver for others. We will extend a helping hand to people in distress. The distressed people should not feel lonely,” said Suraj.

Actor Sabyasachi Mishra inspired the youths to stay happy and create awareness to prevent suicide. Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, DGP YB Khurania, and commissioner of police S Dev Datta Singh also inspired the youths in the meeting. The govt launched a statewide programme, ‘Jeevan Zindabad’, to prevent suicide.The department of psychology at Utkal University is observing Suicide Prevention Awareness Week. The university is organising several activities spread over the week.

Among these are community awareness programme, a workshop on suicide prevention, a campus awareness programme, a pop quiz, and poster and skit competitions.Amrit Pattojoshi, professor and head of the department of psychiatry at a private medical college, expressed concern over the increasing rate of suicide among students and encouraged everyone to create hope and support for each other when we need it most.
