Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday (October 28) praised literary critic M. Leelavathy for never retracting her remarks on “starving children of Gaza” despite the vitriolic social media onslaught launched against her over her views.

He was referring to her remarks on the occasion of her birthday that “she was finding it hard to have food, thinking about starving children with empty stomachs in Gaza. She stood courageous despite the cyber attack on her,” he said in his address after presenting the Deshabhimani Literary Award to her at the seminar hall of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).

Ms. Leelavathy said that she would hand over ₹2 lakh out of the total ₹3 lakh cash prize received as part of the award towards the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. The remaining fund will be handed over to a few who had sought help after the award was announced, she said.

M. Mukundan, author, and P. Rajeeve, Industries Minister, were among those who attended.
