In a fresh development, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda will take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for a three-lane short transitory twin tunnel from Hebbal Junction to Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries University (KVAFSU).
The short tunnel will span 2.27 km, and an elevated corridor from the KVAFSU to Mehkri Circle will be built. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the implementing agency, recently awarded the contract. The contractor has also carried out soil testing.
According to sources, the project was suggested by the Bengaluru Traffic Police to help ease congestion in areas such as Ganganagar, Sanjay Nagar, and R.T. Nagar. While there was initial opposition from the public, the government continued to support the project, citing the impact of short tunnels in reducing micro-level congestion.
The Karnataka Cabinet had given administrative approval for the project in December 2025. Tenders were called twice for the project, as no contractor had shown interest the first time.
