Coco Gauff Advances To US Open Last 16 After Win Over Magdalena Frech

Coco Gauff defeated Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 at the US Open, advancing to the last 16 after overcoming early struggles and a recent coaching change at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Coco Gauff overcame her early round difficulties to advance to the last 16 of the US Open on Saturday, defeating Poland’s Magdalena Frech in straight sets.

After struggling in her win against Donna Vekic on Thursday, which left her in tears, Gauff delivered her best performance of the tournament, beating the 28th seed Frech 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 13 minutes.

The American third seed’s preparations for the US Open were disrupted when she decided to change her coaching team to improve her service game, just days before the competition began.

Although her serve posed problems in the initial rounds, Gauff managed to find her rhythm in Saturday’s match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

She faced only two break points during the entire match, was broken once, and won 71 percent of her points on first serve.

“It’s been an emotional week, but I think I needed those tough moments to move forward," Gauff said afterwards. “I think today showed I was really having fun out there."

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, gained an early lead by breaking Frech in her first service game and holding to go up 3-0.

Although Gauff was broken in the fifth game, allowing Frech to level at 3-3, she quickly won the next three games to secure the first set.

In the second set, Gauff broke Frech in the third game and held to make it 3-1.

She then broke Frech twice more to seal the victory, setting up a fourth-round match against either Japan’s Naomi Osaka or Australia’s Daria Kasatkina, who play later Saturday.
