COIMBATORE: Doctors in Coimbatore’s Royal Care Hospital have removed a massive tumour, weighing 7.5 kg, from the abdomen of a 33-year-old woman. The woman from the Nilgiris district had suffered from severe abdominal pain and swelling for more than six months and found no relief despite seeking treatment in several hospitals. After the woman was admitted to Royal Care Hospital, a detailed medical evaluation was carried out. While all cancer markers tested normal, an MRI scan revealed a huge tumour in the abdomen and pelvic region, a release from the hospital said.A multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Manikandan (onco surgeon), Dr Vinodha (obstetrician & gynaecologist), Dr Muthukumar (anaesthesiologist) and Dr Annapoorani (pathologist) performed a complex surgery to remove the mass. The operation was completed without complications, and the entire tumour was extracted.A frozen section test during surgery confirmed the tumour was a uterine leiomyoma (fibroid tumour), a benign growth. The patient made a steady recovery and was discharged in a stable condition four days after the surgery.
