Coimbatore man attempts to rape 75-year-old mother-in-law; thrashed by son, hospitalised

COIMBATORE: A 51-year-old man attempted to rape his 75-year-old mother-in-law at Kannappa Nagar in Coimbatore city. The man's son thrashed him and admitted him to a private hospital.The accused has been identified as R Manikandan, 51, a resident of Kannappa Nagar near Rathinapuri in Coimbatore city.On Tuesday afternoon, Manikandan, who was under the influence of alcohol, locked the main door from inside and attempted to rape his mother-in-law. The elderly woman raised an alarm, following which neighbors rushed to the spot and broke open the door to rescue her.Meanwhile, Manikandan's son Deepak, 21, reached the house and severely beat his father, punching him in the face. Manikandan was subsequently admitted to a private hospital for treatment.The Central All Women Police received a complaint from the elderly woman and registered an FIR on Tuesday night. The police are likely to arrest Manikandan on Wednesday afternoon.Further investigation is ongoing.(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
