Coimbatore will soon get more train services, said Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan in the city on Tuesday.
Speaking at a felicitation event organised by the Coimbatore Citizens Forum, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that when Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw met him, he had placed two demands – a Vande Bharat train from Ernakulam to Bengaluru with stops at Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Salem and a daily train between Coimbatore and Ranchi to cater to the rail needs of workers from Jharkhand and the northern States. Coimbatore will get both these services soon, he said.
Infrastructure development of a place leads to economic growth of that area as seen in Bengaluru. Development of an airport aided the growth of Bengaluru. So, expansion of the international airport and more international flights are a necessity for Coimbatore. “I will support both these demands,” he said.
Mr. Radhakrishnan spoke in detail about his contributions for the coir sector when he was the Coir Board chairman and for the textile sector as Coimbatore MP. The Vice-President added that when he assumed office at the Vice-President of the country, it brought pride to the Tamil people, Tamil Nadu and Coimbatore region.
President of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association M. Karthikeyan said the Vice-President should take up with the Ministers concerned development of 120-km industrial corridor between Karur and Coimbatore, widening of the 22-km Neelambur and Madukkarai bypass, expansion of the Coimbatore International airport and Coimbatore Metro Rail project.
M. Manickam, chairman and Managing Director of Sakthi Sugars, said Mr. Radhakrishnan is known for his hardwork and encouragement for the youth. His support is essential for the growth of the western districts of the State, he said.
According to Rajesh B. Lund, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, the Vice-President’s assurance of support for the agricultural and industrial sectors in Coimbatore will support the growth of the region.
