What happened in 'Wicked: Part One'

The first film, which was directed by Jon M. Chu and released last November, set the stage for the epic story of Oz before Dorothy's arrival. It introduced audiences to the fiery, misunderstood Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and the bubbly, popular Glinda (Ariana Grande) as they become unlikely roommates and, eventually, friends at Shiz University.

The film ended on a major cliffhanger, with Elphaba branded the "Wicked Witch of the West" after defying the Wizard's corrupt regime, forcing her to flee. Glinda, meanwhile, embraces her new public role as "Glinda the Good," setting up a heartbreaking conflict for the sequel.
