Russian President Vladimir Putin extended a warm welcome to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday, inviting him to visit Moscow during their latest meeting in Beijing. The two leaders met on the sidelines of a large military parade held to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a key event in China’s Victory Day celebrations, stated Reuters.

Their conversation, which lasted two-and-a-half hours, took place at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in the Chinese capital. As the meeting concluded, the leaders embraced before parting ways. Kim told Putin through an interpreter, “See you soon," to which Putin responded, “We are waiting for you, come visit us."

The Kremlin confirmed that both leaders travelled together from a reception to the meeting venue, highlighting the close nature of their diplomatic exchange.

Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, North Korea has provided increasing support to Moscow. In their recent talks, Kim once again pledged full backing, telling Putin he would do “everything I can to assist." Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s military support, specifically acknowledging the deployment of North Korean troops who assisted Russian forces in repelling a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk border region.

During the meeting, Kim emphasised that ties between the two nations have “significantly strengthened" since the signing of a strategic partnership agreement in June 2024 during a summit in Pyongyang.

The Beijing parade marked a major diplomatic moment for Kim, as it was his first time participating in a multilateral event during his 14-year rule. It was also the first public appearance of Kim, Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping together, presenting a united front amid ongoing global tensions.

During the parade, Xi Jinping warned that the world was standing at “a crossroads between peace and war," while standing alongside Putin and Kim, a rare visual of trilateral alignment among China, Russia, and North Korea.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump expressed his concerns, stating he was “very disappointed" with Putin and suggesting that Xi, Putin, and Kim were “conspiring against the United States." In response, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told Russian state television, “No one has been conspiring, no one has been plotting anything, no conspiracies."
