Condoms, a massage machine, a make-up room, stacks of relief goods, land documents, and what locals claim is a handwritten ledger of job-for-cash deals — this is what BJP workers say they found inside the ward office of a Trinamool Congress councillor in Kolkata’s Mukundapur locality on Monday. The councillor at the centre of the storm is Ananya Bandyopadhyay, who represents Ward 109 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

The discoveries triggered protests outside Ananya’s ward office, with BJP workers and supporters storming the premises and demanding answers. Ananya has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the office keys are not even in her possession — and that the relief items found inside were likely leftover Eid donations.

Who Is Ananya Bandyopadhyay?

Ananya is a Tollywood actress, spokesperson of the All India Trinamool Congress, and the elected councillor of KMC Ward 109. A graduate in English from Calcutta University, she has previously served as chairperson of the West Bengal Women’s Development Initiative and as a member of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Her ward covers parts of south-east Kolkata including Mukundapur, Santoshpur, and Nayabad.
