A video of a person abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the stage during the opposition Congress-RJD’s Vote Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga on Wednesday drew sharp criticism from the NDA. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav were crossing Darbhanga and heading to Muzaffarpur when the incident occurred.

A Congress leader said the person, who the party claims is yet to be identified, made the objectionable remarks around 11:30 am at an event in Bithauli village under the Jale assembly segment.

He was stopped by someone on stage, and the usual slogan of “Vote chor, gaddi chhor (vote thief, give up your throne)” was then used. Mohammed Naushad Alam, a Congress ticket hopeful from Jale, was on stage when the incident occurred.

Two days ago, Alam and another Congress leader, M Usmani, who unsuccessfully contested the 2020 Assembly polls from Jale against BJP’s Jiwesh Mishra, got into an argument over taking control of the stage during Gandhi’s yatra.

Alam eventually managed to get his way so he could welcome Gandhi and other leaders. It is unclear whether Gandhi or other leaders were supposed to address the crowd at Bithauli. After the incident, the yatra proceeded without delay, following a brief pause, without any speeches.

BJP state vice-president Santosh Pathak said, “We highly condemn the incident. The onus is on Congress to identify the person who used foul language.”

Congress spokesperson Gyan Ranjan Gupta said, “We equally condemn the incident. Rahul Gandhi was not scheduled to address the public at Bithauli. The person needs to be identified and brought to book.”
