Kerala Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against Congress’s Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who was suspended from the party on August 25 after he stepped down as Youth Congress’s Kerala state president, in the wake of allegations of misconduct from women.

Though no woman has so far come forward with a formal complaint against Rahul, the police acted upon complaints the state police chief had received and registered an FIR under section 78(2) of BNS for offences of stalking, and section 120(0) of Kerala Police Act, which deals with repeatedly causing annoyance to a person through any means of communication.

An official communication from the state police said, “The complaints were examined and found that they were included in the category of cognizable offence. The FIR was registered as per the direction of the state police chief (Ravada Chandrasekhar). Crime Branch Deputy SP P C Binu Kumar will probe into the case.”

It said the case was registered for stalking women through social media in such a manner causing them mental trauma and sending threatening messages through social media forcing them to undergo abortion.

Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters that necessary legal action will be taken and assured that complainants will get all protection and don’t need to worry about lodging complaints.

Rahul was forced to quit as the state Youth Congress president last Thursday after a TV journalist-turned-actor Rini Ann George accused a “young politician” of sending her obscene messages and inviting her to a hotel room. Later, several voice clips allegedly attributed to Rahul came out in the media. In a purported voice clip, Rahul can be heard threatening a woman to undergo abortion.

Although a section of leaders demanded that he should quit as a legislator, the Congress subsequently decided to suspend him from the party’s primary membership, claiming that the CPI(M) had not acted against its legislator M Mukesh who was chargesheeted in a rape case last year.
