A Congress worker and gram panchayat member was killed during a violent clash between two groups in Karnataka's Chikkamagaluru district late Friday night, police said on Saturday.

The victim, Ganesh Gowda, 38, was attacked with a sharp weapon around 9.30 pm near Kalmadeshwara Math Road, following a dispute over a banner. Police have so far arrested four of the accused, while three others are absconding.

According to police, members of both groups had earlier quarrelled near a bar in the town, and the confrontation escalated soon after. Several people from both sides suffered serious head injuries and were admitted to the Chikkamagaluru District Hospital.

Superintendent of Police Vikram Amathe said a Scene of Crime Officer team visited the spot and four police teams were formed to trace the attackers. Two persons involved in the clash are currently hospitalised under guard.

“We are verifying the motive behind the incident. Action will be taken based on the complaint and investigation,” Amathe said, adding that the exact sequence of events will be established once the remaining accused are arrested. A case has been registered at the Sakharayapatna police station.

In Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he had sought details from the district police and assured strict action. In a post on X, he condemned the killing, saying he was “as saddened by the death of Ganesh Gowda as his own family members,” and vowed to ensure the culprits receive the maximum punishment under the law. “Anyone who raises weapons against people who desire peace and harmony will be firmly dealt with,” he added.

Home Minister G Parameshwara said the motive would be clear once the investigation progresses, while district in-charge minister K J George termed the incident “heinous and condemnable” and directed officials to prevent such clashes in the future.

A case has been registered at the Sakharayapatna police station, and a search is underway to trace the remaining suspects.
